Toledo, OH – February 20, 2011 – Owens Corning (NYSE:OC), the leading global producer of glass fiber reinforcements for composite systems, announced its ShieldStrand® S fabric is approved for military use under MIL-DTL-64154B (glass fiber reinforced phenolic composite laminate) by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. ShieldStrand® S fabric provides the highest level of ballistic performance and is classified as Class C, Code 1 material. ShieldStrand® S fabric is approved after an intensive qualification process that included a wide sampling of fabricators and resins.
 

ShieldStrand® S fabric meets EFP requirements for several armor configurations and the most demanding spall liner requirements. Developed specifically for armor applications, ShieldStrand® S fabric can increase protection, payload and performance by reducing weight by up to 30 percent when replacing aluminum and up to 50 percent when replacing steel in certain applications.
 

ShieldStrand® S reinforcements and fabric provide better structural performance than aramid, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene and polypropylene fibers. They also enable armor designers and integrators to develop solutions that meet fire, smoke and toxicity (FST) industry standards including ASTM E84, ASTM E662, ASTM D2863 and FMVSS 302.
